Tennessee Tiered Supports Center

Tennessee Tiered Supports Center builds district and school capacity to implement and sustain a tiered support system that matches instruction and intervention to student needs.

We provide training, coaching, and resources on best practices to improve academic and nonacademic outcomes of all students.

What is a Tiered System of Support?

A tiered system of support is a prevention-focused approach to improving the outcomes of all students.

It provides a conceptual framework for systematically identifying and addressing student needs through instruction and intervention provided at an appropriately matched intensity. Educators provide universal (Tier I) instruction and support to all students. For students with identified risk, educators provide targeted (Tier II) and more intensive instruction or intervention that supplements Tier I supports. For students with significant risk or persistent needs, educators provide intensive(Tier III) and individualized instruction and intervention. Educators continuously monitor student progress, using multiple data sources to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction and intervention and optimize its impact.

What is RTI2-A + RTI2-B?

Response to Instruction and Intervention for Academics and Behavior (RTI2-A + RTI2-B) is Tennessee’s approach to tiered academic and behavioral student support.  It involves aligning systems and practices that support students’ academic and non-academic needs. RTI2-A + RTI2-B is characterized by supportive Leadership, intentional Assessment, collaborative Data-Based Decision Making, and research-based Instruction and Intervention that work together to support students’ holistic and diverse needs.
